This week marks one year since devastating floods ravaged the eastern Libyan city of Derna.

The flood resulted in over 5,000 deaths and displaced thousands.

Now, the city is slowly beginning to recover. Local efforts, bolstered by international aid, are helping Derna rebuild after the catastrophic storm - albeit with some political obstacles.

A report by the World Bank, UN and EU said the dams' collapse was partly due to their design, based on outdated hydrological information, and partly a result of poor maintenance and governance problems during Libya's conflict.
