Mohamed Salah has spoken up on the ongoing Israel-Gaza war by posting a video on social media urging "world leaders to come together to prevent further slaughter of innocent souls". The Liverpool and Egypt forward also said humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip must be allowed "immediately".
"Humanity must prevail," he added.
His video was posted a day after the devastating bombardment of Al-Ahli Arab Hospital, which is widely believed to have been caused by an Israeli air strike. Israel claims that the hospital strike was caused by an errant missile launched by the Palestinian Islamic Jihad group, but Palestinian officials have rejected this narrative.
Notably, Israel does have a history of striking hospitals, schools, and shelters and committing other violations of international law and fundamental norms of war. For 13 days now, Israel has been launching fierce and indiscriminate strikes on densely populated Gaza, killing nearly 3,785 people at the time of writing, mostly women and children. More than 12,000 others have been wounded.
The latest military campaign is in response to an unprecedented attack on Israel on 7 October by Hamas, which killed 1,400 Israelis.
