Belal Muhammad has made history as the first mixed martial arts fighter of Palestinian background to win a UFC title, claiming the welterweight crown from English champion Leon Edwards. The 36-year-old, born in Chicago to Palestinian immigrants, secured a unanimous decision victory (48-47, 48-47, 49-46) at UFC 304 in Manchester on Saturday, extending his unbeaten streak to 11 fights. Despite a bloodied face, Muhammad dropped to his knees in triumph as the championship belt was wrapped around his waist, remaining undefeated since 2019. After donning the championship belt, the fighter dedicated the win to his family and Palestine. He also represented Palestine in the lead-up to the fight and previous fights, carrying the Palestinian flag in press conferences and during the weigh-in for the fight. In addition, Muhammad entered the area wearing the flag with the song ‘My Blood is Palestinian’ by Palestinian singer Mohammed Assaf. Meanwhile, he has consistently used his platform to criticise the Israeli war on Gaza.
