Extremist Israeli settlers are still harassing and confronting members of Christian clergy in the Old City of occupied East Jerusalem.

One such clergy member who is no stranger to such incidents is Nikodemus Schnabel, a German abbot who over the weekend fell victim to deliberate harassment by an Israeli settler near the Zion Gate.

The confrontation involved spitting and verbal abuse and was caught on video that went viral on social media last weekend.

The incident also underscores a longstanding and contentious tradition among some extremist Jewish factions, who have been reported to express their disdain for Christian presence through such provocative behavior.

Last year, Schnabel went viral for a similar incident in July last year, when he was asked to remove his cross as he toured Jerusalem’s Old City with German Education Minister Bettina Stark-Watzinger.
