In the UK, prosecutors have charged a 17-year-old with murder and attempted murder over a knife attack on Tuesday, leaving three girls dead and 10 others wounded in the seaside town of Southport in northwest England. Following false claims about the faith of a suspect involved, riots broke out in the same area, targeting the Muslim community. The anti-Muslim riot was fueled by false online disinformation spread by right-wing influencers. These claims sparked violence, including incidents at a mosque, where right-wing protesters threw bricks at police and set a vehicle on fire in the town of Southport, near Liverpool. The violence spread to Hartlepool on Wednesday with pressure on the government to step in.
