Palestinian woman Wafa Jarrar dies from injuries sustained during Israeli detention
A Palestinian woman, Wafa Jarrar, has died from injuries sustained during her detention by Israeli forces in May, her son Hudayfa Jarrar confirmed on Monday.
The 50-year-old mother of four was detained in the occupied West Bank City of Jenin on 21 May and was only released after she underwent surgery to amputate her legs reportedly due to injuries suffered when being brought to a detention centre.
During the military raid, an explosive device hit the military vehicle that was transferring Jarrar to the Al-Jalama military camp, the Israeli army said at the time, however no further details around the explosion were provided.
Jarrar's amputation took place during her time in detention at the Israeli Afula Hospital.
In June, Palestinian rights groups claimed Israeli prison authorities only released Jarrar to evade responsibility for her serious medical state. Further tests on Jarrar revealed she had sustained other injuries, including to her spine and lungs.
The Euro-Med Human Rights Monitor said the "Israeli army bears full responsibility" for Jarrar’s death in a statement posted in June. Her arrest was arbitrary from the start and had no legal basis to justify her detention, the NGO added.
Jarrar’s husband, Abdul Jabbar, 58, was also arrested and held in administrative detention in February.
Hundreds of Palestinians marched in Jenin on Monday to mourn Jarrar’s death and denounce Israeli forces.
Jenin and other West Bank cities have seen an uptick in tension since the start of Israel’s war on Gaza in October.
According to the UN, Israel has killed at least 502 Palestinians in the West Bank since 7 October and arrested over 7,350 others in the same time frame.
