Palestinian prisoner dies in Israeli custody following 'medical neglect'

A Palestinian prisoner from the besieged Gaza Strip died after serving 28 years in Israeli prisons, four of which he spent in solitary confinement, despite being due to be released since 2013.

The Palestinian Prisoners Club said Faris Baroud, 51, from Al-Shatei refugee camp, died shortly after he was transferred from Rimon prison in the south of Israel to an Israeli hospital after his health deteriorated.

Baroud was arrested in 1991 and sentenced to life in prison along with 35 years for killing a settler. Prior to his death, he complained of stomach problems and asthma, which was Prisoners Club said Baroud was treated “deliberately with negligence”. He underwent surgery last year to remove a part of his kidney after his health rapidly declined due to prison conditions.

He was supposed to have been released in the prisoners' exchange with Israel in 2013, which Israel backtracked on.

The Prisoner Club held the Israel Prison Services responsible for his death due to medical negligence and warned more Palestinians with chronic illnesses could die in the Israeli prison system.
