Manchester boy suspended from school for 'racist abuse' after shouting 'free Palestine' in class
A boy in Manchester has been suspended from his school after he allegedly shouted "free Palestine" in class, British media reported on Monday.
A copy of the letter that was sent from Parrs Wood High School to the boy's parents was shared on Twitter on Saturday, with the decision sparking backlash online.
The user who shared the letter on the social media platform slammed the school’s decision as "disgusting and shocking", adding that he was "ashamed" to have gone to the school himself.
The letter stated that the pupil was excluded for half a day for committing "racist abuse" after "he shouted out 'free Palestine'" in a class.
Choudry’s post has since been deleted, but not before it received fierce criticism by scores of fellow Twitter users, who described the move as “appalling” and “unbelievable”.
Several labeled the letter "appalling," and suggested that the parents should contact a lawyer.
"There's nothing racist about saying "Free Palestine" and a Manchester school shouldn't be excluding kids for doing so," one Twitter user said.
"There's nothing racist about saying 'Free Palestine' and a Manchester school shouldn't be excluding kids for doing so," another user said.
A statement issued by the school to local media in Manchester said that the boy was excluded because the remark was allegedly made towards a member of the school community based on their ethnicity.
The news of the suspension comes after thousands of people protested across the UK in solidarity with the people of Palestine.
The region has seen the worst violence with Israel since 2014, with the death toll in Gaza reaching 200, including 58 children, in one week alone.
