Israel is opposed to the proposed forthcoming nuclear deal with Iran and will “work to bring it down” said Benny Gantz early on Monday.

The terms of the deal has changed, according to the Israeli defence minister, and contravenes US responsibilities towards Israel - who will try “various options” to thwart the deal.

Gantz’s comments come as Israel’s national security adviser, Eyal Hulata, heads to Washington to present Israel’s reservations and objections to the deal.

Hulata is set to meet with his US counterpart, Jake Sullivan, to discuss developments in the negotiations

According to Israeli news site Waala, the US has been seeking to placate Israel in recent days - promising that no deal is imminent, and no additional concessions will be made to Tehran in the process.

The leaders of the United States, Britain, France and Germany recently met to discuss efforts to revive the 2015 Iran nuclear deal, according to a White House statement over the weekend.

Western leaders are said to be reviewing Iran’s response to the final draft of the revived deal.

Israel has previously threatened military action against Iran if diplomacy fails to prevent Tehran from developing a nuclear weapons capability.

The defence minister’s recent comments do little to dispel the threat of military engagement between the two countries.

In 2018, then-President Donald Trump reneged on the nuclear deal reached before he took office, calling it too soft on Iran, and reimposed harsh US sanctions, spurring the Islamic Republic to begin breaching its limits on uranium enrichment.
