Iran-backed groups targeted a base belonging to the US-led international coalition in eastern Syria with a barrage of rockets on Friday.

After the Conoco gas base in Deir Az-Zour province was targeted with the seven rockets, the US responded by attacking the sites from which the rockets were launched in eastern Syria.

Activist Wesam Al-Okaidi told The New Arab's Arabic edition Al-Araby Al-Jadeed that Iranian militias fired the rockets, with some falling inside the base.

There was no information on the extent of the losses.

Al-Okaidi said US aircraft belonging to the international coalition forces attacked Iranian militia sites in the villages of Marat and Khasham.

It was accompanied by missile attacks that targeted these two villages, as well as Al-Hussainiyah and Al-Salihiyah.

On the night of Thursday into Friday, the Iranian militias targeted the vicinity of the Conoco base with a single missile.

After midnight, militia sites were attacked with fire from aircraft machine guns in Marat and Khasham and military headquarters were targeted with missiles in the Ayyash and Al-Jourah areas of Deir Az-Zour city.

Iran and Russia support the regime of Syrian leader Bashar Al-Assad.

The US supports the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces, affiliated to an autonomous administration in the country's north and east.
