Gaza video journalist Bisan Owda nominated for 2024 Emmy Award
Gazan video journalist Bisan Owda is up for an Emmy award for her series "It's Bisan from Gaza and I'm Still Alive".
The Palestinian activist and filmmaker, who is in her twenties, has become one of the best known Gazan journalists for her chronicling of Israel's brutal assault and invasion of Gaza since October 7.
Her series of short documentary videos have borne witness to Israel's destruction of the Gaza Strip, as she broadcast the plight of Gazans struggling to survive to the world.
She has continued to do so in spite of the war on Gaza being recognised by the UN as early as February as being the "deadliest, most dangerous conflict for journalists in recent history".
At that point, over 122 of Gaza's media workers had been killed - after just four months of Israel's assault, and the Committee to Protect Journalists (PJ) had accused Israel of deliberately targeting media workers.
"We are honoured to highlight the accomplishments and hard work of these exceptional journalists and documentarians," NATAS president and CEO Adam Sharp said in a statement regarding the nominations.
Owda's series has been aired in collaboration with AJ+ and has garnered more than 40 million views across various social media platforms. It is being nominated under the category Outstanding hard news feature story: Short form.
The 2024 News & Documentary Emmy Awards will be presented by the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences on 25 and 26 September in New York.
In May this year, Owda and AJ+ won the prestigious Peabody Award for their reportage of the horrific impact Israel's war on Gaza has had on Palestinians.
