Gaza faced continued attacks from Israeli forces overnight Monday with tensions across the region high as Iran weighed up a retaliatory response to the Israeli strikes on Beirut and Tehran last week.

Attacks were reported in Deir al-Balah, near Nuseirat camp, and east of Khan Younis, with at least four men killed in the Deir al-Balah attack, according to Al-Araby Al-Jadeed.

The Israeli army said it had conducted operations in central Gaza and claimed to have killed 20 fighters in "close-quarters combat" and "aerial strikes" over the past days.

More than 1.8 million Palestinians are living in shelters in the al-Mawassi area and facing dire humanitarian conditions amid the spread of disease. The UN said on Monday that the number of children diagnosed with malnutrition in Gaza surged in July compared to the months before.

Lebanon remains on edge ahead of an anticipated response led by Shia militant group Hezbollah against Israel for the killing of top commander Fuad Shukr last week.

Israel said it shot down a drone launched by Hezbollah into northern Israel on Monday night while Israeli jets strike "Hezbollah military structure" near Kfarkela in southern Lebanon.

Lebanon's foreign minister Abdullah Bou Habib was due to arrive in Cairo for talks with his Egyptian counterpart as officials scramble to defuse tensions between Israel and Iran as the war nears its tenth month.

Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah has been speaking for nearly an hour in Beirut as the country is on edge awaiting an anticipated Iranian attack on Israel.

He claimed that Israel is "no longer as strong as it once was" and feats the Axis of Resistance's (Iranian proxy groups) response. The Shia leader also called on the Lebanese public to remain vigilante and not engage in "psychological warfare" he also said that the group is "not looking to exploit" any victory for "internal Lebanese purposes.

Some further quotes:

  • "Hezbollah and Iran will respond, and while the enemy waits and watches, the capability to retaliate exists from Lebanon, Iran, and Yemen; the Israeli anticipation of a response is part of the punishment and the battle."
  • "The killing of Haniyeh and Shukr is an Israeli achievement, but it is not a victory and does not change anything in the course of the war; Israel remains in a difficult position even after their assassinations."
  • "If the resistance in Gaza is defeated, the risks will extend to Lebanon, Jordan, Syria, Egypt, and all the countries in the region."

The leader of Lebanese group Hezbollah described US policy in the region as "hypocritical" for supporting Israel while claiming to back a ceasefire in Gaza and the establishment of a Palestinian state.

Hassan Nasrallah is currently speaking in Beirut one week after the death of commander Fuad Shukr who was killed by an Israeli strike last week.

Israeli jets have been conducting low-flying "provocative" sorties over Beirut minutes before the speech of Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah, causing loud sonic bombs which shook houses across the city.

Yazan al-Saadi international editor of The New Arab based in Beirut said "Israeli warplanes have been conducting very provocative manoeuvres over the skies of the capital."

"They have done multiple sonic bombs in order to terrorise the population," al-Saadi said.

The explosion-like sounds come just two days after the fourth anniversary of the devastating Beirut port explosion which ripped up swathes of the capital and left thousands with mental and physical wounds.

Hassan Nasrallah is due to address his followers at around 5pm Beirut time to mark a week since the death of top commander Fuad Shukr.

Journalists in Beirut said buildings shook from a sonic boom induced by a low-flying Israeli fighter jet on Tuesday.

The New Arab's international editor in the city described them as "very, very loud" sonic booms, an explosion-like sound.

Israeli jets have regularly been breaching Lebanese airspace to drop bombs over what it says are Hezbollah military targets mainly in the south of the country. However, its fighter planes have been flying over Beirut and further north - regarded as a deliberate intimidatory move.

UNIFIL on Israel-Lebanon border 'fundamental', says chief
2:21 PM
The New Arab Staff & Agencies

UN peacekeepers on the Israeli-Lebanese border have never been more crucial, the force's global chief Jean-Pierre Lacroix said Tuesday, as fears soared of an escalation in the Middle East.

Since Palestinian militant group Hamas attacked Israel on October 7, sparking a war in the Gaza Strip, Israel and Lebanese movement Hezbollah, a Hamas ally, have traded near-daily cross-border fire.

But worry has grown of a wider regional conflict, especially after the killing, blamed on Israel, of a top Hamas leader in Iran and an Israeli air strike that killed a Hezbollah commander in the Beirut southern suburbs last week.

The role of the UN peacekeeping force in Lebanon, UNIFIL, was today "more important than ever", Under Secretary-General for Peace Operations Jean-Pierre Lacroix told AFP.

"It's the only liaison channel between the Israeli side and the Lebanese side in all its components, such as Hezbollah," he said.

"It's fundamental because it allows us to clarify certain things and avoid misunderstandings... miscalculations, uncontrolled and unwanted escalations," he said.

Iran has yet to make any arrests linked to the suspected Israeli killing of Hamas political chief Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran, the Iranian judiciary said Tuesday.

The leader of the Palestinian militant group was killed last Wednesday during a visit for the swearing-in ceremony of Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian.

The "necessary investigations" have begun and the results will be announced "as soon as the probe is completed," said judiciary spokesman Asghar Jahangir.

"Until today, no arrests have been made in connection with this case," he said, adding that the investigations involved Iranian military officials.

Iran's Revolutionary Guards said Haniyeh was killed using a "short-range projectile" launched from outside his accommodation in Tehran.

Iran and Hamas have blamed Israel and vowed to retaliate. Israel has declined to comment.

UN expert condemns Israeli killing of Al Jazeera journalist

The New Arab Staff & Agencies

A United Nations expert on Tuesday condemned Israel's killing last week of Al Jazeera journalist Ismail Al-Ghoul and cameraman Ramy El Rify in Gaza and urged that the deaths be prosecuted as a war crime.

The two men died in a July 31 airstrike by the Israeli military, which said Al-Ghoul was a Hamas operative who took part in the Oct. 7 attack against Israel.

The Israel Defence Forces has released a document seized from Hamas computers that it said corroborates its claim.

"I strongly denounce the deliberate targeting by Israel of two journalists in Gaza, which adds to an already appalling toll of reporters and media workers killed in this war," Irene Khan, the UN Special Rapporteur on freedom of opinion and expression, said in a statement.

Israel's military said Al-Ghoul belonged to the elite Nukhba unit and was involved in recording and publicizing attacks on Israeli troops.

The New Arab Staff & Agencies

South Korea said on Tuesday it will issue a ban on its citizens travelling to the border areas of Israel and Lebanon after advising them to leave the countries amid escalating tensions in the Middle East.

The foreign ministry said the ban will start from Wednesday in areas near the Blue Line, referring to a demarcation line between Lebanon and Israel where parts of the international border are disputed.

The ministry also "strongly advised" its nationals in Lebanon and Israel to leave the countries as soon as possible.

A temporary advisory urging against travel to Iran was also set to be issued, the ministry said in a statement.

The travel advisory was issued after a commander of the Iran-aligned Lebanese group Hezbollah and the head of the political wing of Hamas, the group that runs the Gaza Strip, were killed, Lee Jae-woong, a ministry spokesperson said.

The assassinations came after a deadly rocket attack in the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights late last month.

"South Korea's government...hopes that diplomatic efforts to de-escalate tensions such as negotiations for a ceasefire and hostage release will not stop," Lee told a briefing.

More than 500 South Korean nationals are currently residing in Israel and around 120 in Lebanon as of Tuesday, according to the ministry.

The New Arab Staff & Agencies

Palestinian officials say four Palestinians were killed, including three teenagers, and another seven were wounded by Israeli fire during a military raid in the occupied West Bank.

The Palestinian Health Ministry said Tuesday that the raid was carried out overnight in the village of Aqaaba in the northern West Bank. Those killed included two 19-year-olds and a 14-year-old. Separately, the Islamic Jihad militant group reported heavy fighting with the army in the Jenin refugee camp in the northern West Bank, a frequent flashpoint.

There was no immediate comment from the Israeli military.

Israel has carried out near-daily military raids across the West Bank since Hamas’ Oct. 7 attack out of Gaza triggered the ongoing war there. Palestinians from the West Bank have also carried out a number of attacks on Israelis.

The Health Ministry says over 600 Palestinians have been killed by Israeli fire in the West Bank since the start of the war. Most were killed during military arrest raids and violent protests.
