Early on Saturday, Palestinian fighters fired rockets from Gaza towards Israel in response to attacks by Israeli aircrafts on the fifth day of aggression on the coastal enclave.

The violence also spilled onto the occupied West Bank, where two Palestinians were killed in an Israeli raid on the outskirts of Nablus.

A new ceasefire proposal was circulated late on Friday by Egypt, which has been mediating between the two sides after a previous bid fell through, a Palestinian source has said.

A Palestinian official familiar with the truce talks described them as "complicated" and "tough" but confirmed that Cairo was pressing ahead with its efforts.

Gaza family flees as home destroyed a second time

Fatima Bashir's family had a few minutes warning before an Israeli air strike destroyed their home in the Deir Al-Balah area of Gaza for the second time in a decade, leaving only a mass of rubble, broken furniture and scattered household items.

Shortly before the strike, smaller projectiles hit the house.

"We heard a noise. Our neighbours were shouting, 'Get out of the house! Evacuate the house!', so we ran away, into the street," she said. "We got nothing out."

In 2014, during a previous round of fighting between Israel and Palestinian militants in Gaza, the Bashir's home was also hit.

"They destroyed our homes before and we rebuilt it, and this time we will rebuild it too," she added.

Palestinian presidential spokesman holds Israel, US responsible for Palestinian killing

Nabil Abu Rudeineh, the official spokesman for the presidency, said today that the Israeli forces and the US are responsible for the deterioration on the ground in the occupied territories.

Abu Rudeineh stressed that Israel has "crossed all red lines" by continuing with its policies of killings and incursions into the Palestinian cities, villages and refugee camps - the latest of which was the assault on Balata camp in Nablus this morning that led to the death of two young men and the wounding of others - as well as the continuous aggression for the fifth consecutive day against the Palestinians in the Gaza Strip.

Abu Rudeineh held the Israeli occupation government responsible for these serious crimes committed against all the Palestinian territories, which, he warned, will have great repercussions on the stability of the entire region.

He said that the US administration also bears responsibility for the deterioration of the situation as a result of its silence toward the Israeli aggression and failure to immediately intervene to stop them.

In a statement, the ministry said that the Israeli government’s refusal to allow entry of assistance and medical and food supplies into the besieged Gaza Strip was a blatant violation of international law, the Geneva Convention, and international humanitarian law.
