Editors of the English-language edition of Wikipedia have renamed an article on the Gaza war to accuse Israel of genocide.

The article, which had been called "Allegations of genocide in the 2023 Israeli attack on Gaza", is now titled "Gaza genocide".

The change, reportedly made on 25 July, comes as Israel stands accused of genocide at the International Court of Justice (ICJ).

South Africa took Israel to the UN's top court in December, with the tribunal since ordering interim measures while the case is ongoing. Other countries have since joined South Africa's case against Israel.

In May, the ICJ ordered Israel to halt its military offensive in the southern Gaza city of Rafah, though Tel Aviv did not comply.

The chief prosecutor of the International Criminal Court, another tribunal, in May requested arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defence Minister Yoav Gallant.

Karim Khan also requested warrants for Hamas leaders Yahya Sinwar, Mohammed Deif, Ismail Haniyeh, the last of whom was killed in Tehran at the end of last month in a suspected Israeli assassination.

Khan did not mention genocide but instead accused the Israeli and Hamas leaders of war crimes and crimes against humanity.

Since Haniyeh's death, Hamas has chosen Sinwar to take up Haniyeh's position as head of its political bureau.

Israel's war on Gaza has so far killed at least 39,699 people, according to the Palestinian enclave's health ministry, while injuring over 90,000 people.

Hospitals, ambulances, and residential buildings have been attacked and Gaza's infrastructure has been totally devastated. A siege has also been imposed, bringing the Palestinian territory to the brink of famine.
