While the actual motive behind the crime remains unclear, several cases of domestic violence have been reported over the past two years, mostly triggered by the economic crisis that had a toll on poor and lower-income brackets in Egypt.

Egypt's Kaft Ghatati village near the Giza Plateau reportedly faced gruesome news this week when a seemingly troubled man slit his wife's and two daughters' throats and attempted to kill his three other girls.

"The [suspect] has been remanded in custody, pending further investigations into the charges of the premeditated murder of his wife and two daughters and the attempted murder of his other children," the prosecutor's office said in a statement on Wednesday evening.

"The man had confessed his wrongdoings, earlier revealed through police investigations, as the prosecution ordered an autopsy of bodies of the three victims," the statement added.

The heinous crime was reported on Tuesday by a neighbour who happened to hear the victims screaming for help inside their flat in the lower-middle-class village.

"The neighbour testified that [the suspect] has been known for his misconduct, frequently abusing his wife and children," the statement read.

Local news outlets reported that the suspect had been released from prison days earlier after serving a sentence for another crime.

While the motive behind the crime remains unclear, several cases of domestic violence have been reported over the past two years, triggered mainly by the economic crisis that had a toll on poor and lower-income brackets in the North African country.

Based on the National Council for Women statistics, about eight million women are at risk of domestic violence annually, with up to 86% of wives facing different forms of spousal abuse.
