A Qatari humanitarian group has begun implementing a project to create a "City of Dignity" for displaced people in Syria's north.

"Qatar Charity begins to implement the 'City of Dignity' project," the organisation tweeted on Sunday.

The news comes after a deadly earthquake hit Syria on 6 February, killing more than 4,600 people in the country so far.

However, the project appears to predate the quake, based on January tweets from the charity.

"The project aims to improve the living conditions of 600 families… of the most vulnerable displaced people residing in northern Syria," the charity said on a donation page on its website, explaining the project would be split into three stages with 200 homes each.

It will aid Syrians "by providing basic infrastructure and service and social facilities, in addition to constructing residential blocks to house displaced families".

The donation page said displaced families would be registered and settled.

News that Qatar Charity is starting implementation of the "City of Dignity" project comes as Syria reels from the earthquake that struck last week, impacting both opposition- and regime-held areas.

The tremor has killed more than 31,600 people in neighbouring Turkey.
