8,095 Palestinians detained in West Bank since October 7, amid dozens of arrests over weekend
At least 60 Palestinians were arrested from Friday to Sunday in Israeli raids across the occupied West Bank, the Palestinian Prisoners Club and local media said, bringing the number of those detained to 8,095 since October 7.
Among those arrested are at least five women, one child and a number of former prisoners, the Palestinian Prisoners’ Club and the Commission for Ex-Prisoners’ Affairs said in a joint statement.
The arrests took place in the governorates of Hebron, Jenin, Tulkarm, Bethlehem among other locations.
Many of those detained were arrested in their homes or at military checkpoints, while others were forced to surrender under pressure, according to the statement.
Among the detainees were Layan Nasser and Layan Kayed, both of whom are former prisoners in Israeli jails. The two were detained from their homes in Ramallah province, the Palestinian official agency Wafa said on Sunday.
Other people were detained as they exited Jerusalem’s Al-Aqsa Mosque in occupied East Jerusalem after observing Laylat al-Qadr – which is considered by Muslims to be the holiest night of Ramadan.
The two organisations reported "severe beatings, threats against detainees and their families, and vandalism and destruction of citizens' homes" during the arrests.
Since Israel began its deadly war against Gaza six months ago, at least 459 Palestinians in the West Bank have been killed- mostly by Israeli forces but some by Israeli settlers as well.
Around 5,000 people have been injured, including children, according to the Palestinian Ministry of Health.
Israeli forces stepped up raids in the West Bank amid the war on Gaza over the past six months, carrying out near-daily incursions. At least 33,175 Palestinians - mostly women and children - have been killed by Israeli attacks in Gaza.
Furthermore, at least 70 of the Palestinian victims in the West Bank have been killed by airstrikes, highlighting a significant increase of aerial attacks by the Israeli army.
