Trump interrupted by laughter while praising US administration's 'unmatched' achievements at UN

Oil prices rose steeply on Tuesday afternoon just as US President Donald Trump urged international producers to bring down the cost of crude.

Trump blasted the "ideology of globalism" on Tuesday as he delivered his second annual UN General Assembly address in New York.

The speech, which opened with remarks praising his own administration for achieving more than "almost any other administration in the history of our country", was initially greeted with an outbust of muted laughter from the world's representatives.

"We reject the ideology of globalism and we embrace the doctrine of patriotism," Trump said, before taking shot at OPEC for allegedly undermining energy independence.

"OPEC and OPEC nations are as usual, ripping of the rest of the world, and I don't like it, nobody should like it," said Trump. "We defend many of these nations for nothing and then they take advantage of us by giving us high oil prices. Not good."

He urged the General Assembly, which he later described as a "beautiful constellation of nations," not to rely on the powerful oil cartel.

Trump also used the speech to criticise the International Criminal Court (ICC), reaffirm that the US will no longer participate in the UN migration pact and blast the UN human rights council for "shielding human rights abusers" while criticising the US.

The US left the rights council in June.
