Protestors gathered outside the Grand Husseini Mosque in downtown Amman to demonstrate against deal for the Jordanian government to purchase Israeli gas.

Thousands of people met to denounce the $10 billion deal by state-owned National Electric Power Co (Nepco) to source gas from Israel's Leviathan field.

"This deal threatens our sovereignty and makes us all complicit in the Israeli occupation of Palestine," Alia Nusseibeh, who was at the protest, told The New Arab.

"The aim is to show the government and the whole world that the average Jordanian citizen is completely against this gas deal."

Around half of Jordan's population come from Palestine, most coming during the 1967 war when Israel's occupation of the West Bank began.

The protest was organised by the Jordanian National Campaign Against Gas Agreement with the Zionist Entity, which provided t-shirts with the slogan "Gas of the enemy is occupation".

The organisers, a collective of several Jordanian civil society groups, have spoken out at previous protests saying the deal brings Jordan's independence and sovereignty into question.

Many of the protestors have spoken out against the idea of Jordanian money being used to further the Israeli occupation of Palestine.
