Turkish authorities detained a minibus driver after a video of him driving with his daughter strapped to the back of his vehicle went viral, local media reported.

The video, which showed a young girl tied to a moving minibus on a country road, became one of the most viewed videos in Turkey this week.

Police identified the driver, named only as Idris K, after searching the vehicle's registration number.

According to the driver, his 13-year-old daughter was strapped to the back of the minibus after insisting on being placed on the vehicle's bicycle carrier. The vehicle travelled 300 to 400 meters before the girl was unstrapped, he added.

The father-of-eight insisted in a statement that the bicycle carrier was sturdy and could carry up to 150kg.

The driver's 22-year-old son, Enes K, told reporters that the incident and the social media storm that followed had made his family "very sad" and caused much stress.

Authorities have said they are taking steps to ensure the safety of the child.
