The governor of the Lebanese capital Beirut has shut down a nightclub after a video went viral of the venue apparently playing Quranic verses during a party.

Ziad Chbib issued a statement on Saturday, ordering The Garten located in the city's waterfront area to be closed for "disrespecting religious beliefs" and operating without a licence.

The statement said an inspection revealed the club was "unlicensed and was broadcasting musical programmes that offend religious rituals and beliefs".

It added that Chbib ordered authorities to "seal the nightclub with red wax".

The club said in a Facebook post on Saturday that it was closed for the night, without giving a reason for the closure.

A video has circulated purporting to show recordings of Quran verses being played at The Garten, prompting condemnation from many social media users.

Beirut boasts a thriving nightlife, with a bar and club scene that sets it apart from many Arab cities, which tend to be more conservative.

In March, Lebanese authorities shut down another Beirut nightclub after footage emerged of an erotic performance by half-naked dancers.
