Angela Merkel, the Chancellor of Germany, is named Time Magazine's 'Person of the Year 2015' on Wednesday.

Merkel was noted by the magazine for her leading role in in managing Europe’s serial debt crises and for opening Germany's borders to migrants and refugees from Syria and other conflict-ridden countries.

Merkel told her nation to "believe that great civilizations build bridges, not walls," said Nancy Gibbs, the editor of the magazine.

Despite costing her approval ratings, the German Chancellor "stepped in" when others would not, the magazine noted.

"For asking more of her country than most politicians would dare, for standing firm against tyranny as well as expedience and for providing steadfast moral leadership in a world where it is in short supply, Angela Merkel is 'Time's Person of the Year', Gibbs said.

More controversially, Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi leader and self-styled 'Caliph' of IS was named runner-up by Time magazine on the list revealed on Wednesday.

Baghdadi transformed "breakaway al-Qaeda group from a battlefield force operating in the chaos of Syria and Iraq into a transnational terrorist franchise killing civilians in more than a dozen countries around the world" the magazine said.

"Whatever he does in the coming months and years, Baghdadi has made himself the new face of terrorism and target No. 1 in the long struggle to defend humane values" the magazine added.

Donald Trump was included alongside al-Baghdadi in the annual list.

The Person of the Year has been announced by Time Magazine in a dedicated annual issue since 1928, originally called Man of the Year until 1999.

Time Magazine editors decide on the final shortlist, seeking to recognize the most influential people, objects or ideas over a given year "for better or for worse" and has faced controversies in the past.

Recent recipients include "You" in 2006 in reference to the Internet users of the Information age.

"The Protestor" was chosen as Person of the Year 2011 following the onset of the Arab spring.
