A draft resolution at the UN Security Council calling for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza was vetoed by the US yesterday.

It was the third such veto since the start of Israel's relentlessly brutal and genocidal war on the Gaza Strip in October.

US Ambassador to the UN Linda Thomas-Greenfield told the 15-member body that the draft resolution that approving it would be "irresponsible" and could jeopardise ongoing truce talks between the US, Egypt, Israel and Qatar.

The blocked draft resolution, which was drawn up by Algeria, did not link a ceasefire to the release of hostages. Palestinian UN Ambassador Riyad Mansour said blocking the resolution would mean more "horrors" in a war that has killed more than 29,000 Palestinians.
