Sisi has called for measures to slow the birth rate in Egypt, citing China's one-child policy as an example.
The Egyptian president intervened when his minister of health and population, Khaled Abdel Ghaffar, told a conference that "having children is a matter of complete freedom". "I do not agree with your idea that having children is a matter of complete freedom," Sisi said.
Citing China's now-abandoned one-child policy, he called for measures to slow the population growth in the country after it recorded 2.2 million births in 2022.
