After two years of political stalemate, Lebanon has elected army commander Joseph Aoun as its new president.
Aoun garnered 99 votes in the second round of parliamentary voting, which was attended by all 128 MPs.
In his inaugural statement, he vowed to uphold the constitution, safeguard Lebanon's independence, and initiate swift parliamentary consultations to appoint a cooperative prime minister.
The newly elected Aoun is set to face significant internal and external challenges. Lebanon continues to struggle with the aftermath of the recent war with Israel, a collapsing economy, a lack of essential services like electricity and water, border control, and addressing the Syrian refugee crisis.
