The already-devastated Jabalia refugee camp in northern Gaza has been targeted by Israeli airstrikes for the second day in a row.

This is the largest refugee camp in the Gaza Strip, with a dense population of around 116,000 refugees in only 1.4 sq km.

The initial strike yesterday killed dozens of people and sent hundreds to hospital, as rescue operations are still underway and the death toll is likely to rise.

As rescue teams and families continue to search through the rubble, Israeli forces said that the strike aimed to neutralise a senior Hamas commander — a claim that Hamas denies. Hospitals in Gaza are already overwhelmed and running low on fuel and electricity.

The Gaza Health Ministry said today that the number of people killed in Israeli attacks on Gaza has gone up to 8,796, including 3,648 children.
