Game of Thrones stars Lena Headey and Iain Glen are set to star in an independent British production that sheds light on refugees in Europe, Reuters reported on Saturday.

Headey, best known for her depiction of Cersei Lannister in the TV series in the HBO hit drama, will play an immigration officer in The Flood alongside Glen – also known as Ser Jorah Mormont in Game of Thrones.

The film follows the journey of an Eritrean migrant attempting to reach Britain.

"You know what's happening in the world, globally is horrific. And, you know, for it to be dealt in cinematic form, I think is a great thing to do", said Headey.

The title of the film makes reference to the scornful language used by many to describe the mass arrival of refugees to Europe in 2015, when the number of asylum seekers in Europe reached over 1.3 million.

"It's horrendous that after the journeys that these refugees go through, they are then treated immediately with suspicion and fear," Headey told The Guardian.

The film producer Luke Healy said he managed to get the financial backing needed for the production from a prospective buyer he had been showing around his house.

"She didn't end up buying the flat - but she bought the movie. She was our sole investor," he told Reuters.

The Flood remains in the production process and is expected to hit the big screen in 2018.
