#Trending: The Arab world reacts to Brexit

Despite the limited affect Britain's decision to leave the European Union will have on the Middle East, many in the region have flocked to social media to voice their opinions on the historic results.

Results from the EU referendum on Friday morning showed 51.9 per cent of votes backed Britain's exit from the EU, prompting British Prime Minister David Cameron to announce his resignation.

The Arabic-language hashtag #BritainLeavesTheEU has recently gained traction on Twitter shortly after results of the referendum were released.

Translation: "What has happened in the UK is nothing normal or passing. The whole of Europe will soon witness strategic and geopolitical changes that will allow the far right to expand."

Translation: "Brexit marks the beginning of the 'European Spring', which will not end here and eventually lead to the falling apart of the EU."

Translation: "Brexit will have many ramifications: the economy and tourism will be hit hard. People from the Gulf will be the biggest losers."

Translation: "Britain which divided up the Arab countries 100 years ago into incompatible parts will soon taste the bitterness of division and be broken up."

Other Twitter users took a less serious approach to the news.

Translation: "Monoufia (a rural province in Egypt) is demanding a referendum to join the EU in place of the UK."

Translation: "Is this a sign of the end of times?"
