Over 400,000 people are trapped in Eastern Ghouta, surviving on limited amounts of food and spending most of their time squeezed into underground shelters.

The Russian-backed Syrian regime launched a ferocious assault on the rebel enclave of Eastern Ghouta on 18 February, vowing to recapture the territory just outside of Damascus.

Since the military offensive began over 1,031 civilians have been reported killed, including 219 children.

Over 400,000 people are trapped in Eastern Ghouta, surviving on limited amounts of food and spending most of their time squeezed into underground shelters.

On 13 March the Syrian regime targeted the village Zamalka with dozens of airstrikes and heavy artillery shelling.

The civil defence facility in the village was forced to shut due to heavy bombing, which included barrel bombs.

Bashar al-Assad's forces dropped at least 407 deadly barrel bombs on Syrian civilians in February alone. The highly dangerous bombs often contain gasoline, nails and chunks of steel.
