Brangelina is officially no more. Angelina Jolie has filed for divorce from actor Brad Pitt, spelling the end of what is probably Hollywood's most high-profile celebrity couple.

The news took social media by storm this week and the Arab twitterati was no exception.

The BBC recorded over 3,000 uses of the hashtag #Bragelina from the Arab world as an Arabic-language alternative was created.

Users poked fun at traditional excuses often used when couples break up.

[The divorce of #Angelina_Jolie from #Brad_Pitt is evil eye, I can swear by it.]

[The Arab people bragged a lot about Angelina Jolie, her beauty and her life, and her work with refugees. And now she has filed for a divorce from her husband. Evil eye does break up homes!]

Others rushed to take sides.

[I swear I am shocked by #Angelina_Jolie and #Brad_Pitt divorce. What an idiot! How can anyone betray this woman who has a beautiful on the inside and out.]

[I am willing to marry Angelina Jolie and father her children.]

Many however, remained aghast at a media whirlwind created by what was essentially a break-up of two people against the backdrop of human tragedies in the Middle East and elsewhere.

[The Arab world, especially Egypt, has not spoken about Syria and Palestine like they did about the break-up of Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt.]

Jolie, who serves as a goodwill ambassador for the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, is also known for her humanitarian work.

Last week, the actress shone a light on the thousands of refugees that have suffered loss and trauma when she visited a refugee camp in Jordan for Syrians fleeing bombing and fighting.
