A Barbie doll encountered Islamophobia and people aren't happy

The toy company revealed its first ever hijab-wearing Barbie doll in honour of US Olympic fencer Ibtihaj Muhammad, who in 2016 became the first American Olympian to compete wearing the Islamic headscarf.

Muhammad, won bronze in the women's Team Sabre event at the 2016 Rio Olympics, became the first ever Muslim-American women in US history to earn a medal.

The doll, which will be on sale online from 2018, is part of the American toymaker's "Sheroes" collection and is dressed in fencing gear as well as the hijab.

But not everyone was happy about the new doll. American right-wing commentator and former lawyer Ann Coulter, who has made Islamophobic remarks in the past, had something to say about the Barbie.

After September 11, Coulter famously wrote: "We should invade their [Muslim] countries, kill their leaders and convert them to Christianity."

She stood by those comments three years later, and has since suggested Islam is a "car-burning cult" with a "predilection for violence".
