In a brief statement, Iyad al-Bozzom, spokesperson of the Hamas-run interior ministry said, "The cause of the explosion was still under investigation."

No further details were given.

According to local eyewitnesses, Nidal al-Attal was "a militant in Islamist groups" and "was trying to disable one of the homemade missiles which led to the explosion."

"When we heard the explosion, we thought that Israel had launched a new military escalation against us (...) then, we realized that it was an internal incident," the witnesses said.

Social media activists shared alleged pictures and videos of the incident.

The New Arab attempted to speak with the victims' relatives but they had no comment.
