US envoy to visit Sudan this week amid political transition crisis

The US Special Envoy for the Horn of Africa, Jeffrey Feltman, will visit the Sudanese capital this week amid a deepening crisis between civilian and military factions who hold power in Khartoum, according to reports.

"Feltman will arrive in Khartoum later this week for his second visit in three weeks," Axios was told by two sources.

The news website added that the envoy also called Prime Minister Abdalla Hamdok and Gen. General Abdel Fattah Burhan last week to stress "the importance of adhering to the transitional order."

Feltman was last in Sudan in late September to convey a message of US support for Sudan, which has been in political transition since former dictator Omar Al-Bashir was ousted from power in April 2019.

A joint military-civilian council has been in power since, to preside over a three-and-a-half-year transition toward democratic elections.

Hundreds of people took to the streets on Saturday demanding the dissolution of the transitional government, saying it had failed them economically and politically. More protests are expected on Thursday.

On Friday, Hamdok called the situation "the worst and most dangerous crisis" the country has faced during its transition.

A failed coup attempt was thwarted a month ago, which has further complicated the crisis.
