UK will reopen embassy in Tehran on Sunday

Normalisation of ties between Iran and Britain are going at a quick pace. Al-Araby al-Jadeed has received information from informed British sources that the United Kingdom will reopen its Embassy in Tehran this Sunday, 23 August.

The UK embassy in Iran has been closed since 2011 following diplomatic tensions that reached a peak.

According to al-Araby al-Jadeed sources in London, only ten states have been informed about the opening date. They are the six Arab Gulf states, the US, France, Germany, and Iran.

British Foreign Minister Philip Hammond will lead the opening ceremony and Iran will expand its representation in Britain.

Hammond had previously expressed before the British House of Commons, last July - one day after the signing of the nuclear agreement in Geneva - his hope that the British embassy in Tehran would be reopened this year.

Al-Araby al-Jadeed was told that British officials and their media will announce the news on Saturday to secure the necessary media presence for the occasion, which can be considered as the first and clearest result of the nuclear agreement between the Western countries bloc and Iran.
