Flooding caused by torrential rains has killed at least four people in Algeria's western province of Tiaret, the Algerian Civil Defence said on Thursday.

The four victims, who included three children, were all members of the same family, the rescue authority said. Two others were taken to hospital.

Rescuers also evacuated six people endangered by the floods, including two tourists who were trapped in a car in the western province of Tlemcen.

Algeria's National Gendarmerie has closed a number of roads due to torrential rain, while also asking drivers to avoid them.

Environment minister Samia Moualfi offered her condolences to the victims of the floods, saying that such extreme weather has become more frequent due to climate change.
