Iraq's persecuted Yazidi minority announced a new leader, who has been named as Hazim Tahsin Saeed Ali Beg, born in 1963.

Tahsin Saeed Ali Beg was appointed the new Mir, or leader of the Yazidi people, by the Yazidi supreme spiritual council on Saturday.

He's the son of the previous ruler, Mir Tahsin Beg, who died in January having led the Yazidis for 75 years.

Hazim Tahsin Saeed Ali Beg is the highest Yazidi authority, presiding over religious and political activities and leading the decision-making process.

In his first speech, Hazim Tahsin Saeed Ali Beg invoked the Peacock Angel - a central figure in the Yazidi faith - in pledging to serve all the Yazidi people.

He also said he would work with the Kurdistan Regional Government and the Baghdad government to deal with the situation in Sinjar, northern Iraq, the spiritual homeland of the Yazidi.

Thousands of Yazidi were killed, kidnapped or disappeared when Islamic State group captured the Sinjar region and other parts of northern Iraq in 2014.

Although IS have been defeated, the Yazidi community are still dealing with the trauma of the harrowing years under IS control.
