Remains of over 600 Iraqis killed in war with Iran unclaimed: Red Crescent

The Iraqi Red Crescent called on Tuesday for Iraqis to collect the retrieved remains of relatives killed in the Iran-Iraq war of the 1980s.

The remains of some 629 Iraqis who went missing during the eight-year war await collection, the Red Crescent Society said.

In coordination with the Iraqi defence ministry, the NGO published the names of the victims whose remains had been identified.

It asked relatives to collect their remains from the Al-Hassan Al-Basri cemetery in Al-Zubair in the southern province of Basra.

The Red Crescent did not say when and where the remains were discovered.

The society often receives requests from citizens to look for relatives that went missing during the war, which lasted from 1980-1988.

An estimated one million people from both sides were killed.

Iran and Iraq occasionally exchange remains and bodies of soldiers, based on a joint agreement signed in Geneva in 2008.

61 bodies were exchanged between the two countries in December.
