Qatari emir names FM Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al-Thani as new prime minister

Qatar has welcomed a new prime minister, former Foreign Minister Sheikh Mohammed Bin Abdulrahman Al-Thani, after the resignation of his predecessor.

Qatar's Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani appointed Foreign Minister Sheikh Mohammed Bin Abdulrahman al Thani as prime minister, the state news agency said on Tuesday, after the resignation of Prime Minister Sheikh Khalid bin Khalifa bin Abdelaziz Al-Thani.

Sheikh Mohammed has served as the country's deputy prime minister since November 2017 and as foreign minister since 2016. He also acted as chairman of the Qatar Investment Authority (QIA) since 2018. 

Sheikh Khalid was appointed as Qatar's prime minister and minister of interior in January 2020.

Sheikh Mohammed has a high profile internationally, in part due to his position as Qatar's chief diplomat during the 2017 Gulf crisis.

He was also FM during the Qatar World Cup 2022, the region's biggest sporting event.
