Park corner named after Palestine opens in Bulgaria
A corner of a park in Bulgaria named after Palestine was opened on Saturday, around a week after a street paying homage to the Middle Eastern state was inaugurated in Colombia.
The local Palestinian embassy was involved in the inauguration of the corner of the International Park in Dobrich, a city in northeastern Bulgaria.
The Bulgarian parliament's deputy speaker and Dobrich's mayor attended the inauguration, as did athletes and diplomatic corps members, the official Palestinian news agency Wafa reported.
The flag of Palestine was raised over the park corner and olive and other trees were planted in a nod to the country's culture. There was also a panel with information.
"This initiative represents a significant cultural and diplomatic effort to strengthen the bonds of friendship and cooperation between Bulgaria and Palestine," Wafa said.
It comes after a 'State of Palestine' street was inaugurated in Colombia's capital Bogotá on 14 September.
The street naming ceremony began with both countries' national anthems and saw Palestinian Ambassador Raouf Al-Maliki praise the city council.
Foreign Minister Riyad Al-Maliki cut the ribbon with Councillor Ana Teresa Bernal.
The following day, Palestine and Colombia signed four cooperation deals in Bogotá.
The Palestinian and Colombian foreign ministers signed deals including a memorandum of understanding covering technical cooperation and an agreement on removing visa requirements for those with diplomatic and official passports, Wafa reported at the time.
