A young Palestinian woman was shot dead by Israeli soldiers on Monday afternoon at the Beit Iksa checkpoint, north of Jerusalem in the West Bank.

Israeli spokeswoman Luba Samri said the woman approached the checkpoint with a knife. An officer opened fire, killing the woman, who was not immediately identified.

Workers from the Palestinian Red Crescent told The New Arab that Israeli soldiers at the checkpoint prevented ambulances from reaching the scene, and threatened members of staff.

Earlier on Monday, Israeli authorities released the bodies of two siblings - Maram Salih Hassan Abu Ismail and her brother Ibrahim - to their family.

Maram, a pregnant mother of two, and her teenage brother Ibrahim were shot and killed at the Qalandiya checkpoint last month, after they allegedly threw a knife in the direction of Israeli forces.

The fatal incident was the latest in an eight-month uptick of Israeli-Palestinian violence, during which more than 200 Palestinians have been killed.
