Mohamed Salah is bookies’ favourite for PFA Player of the Year despite Ballon d'Or snub
Bookmakers have placed Egypt and Liverpool star Mohamed Salah as the favourite to secure the Professional Footballers’ Association’s (PFA) Player of the Year award, just halfway into the current Premier League season.
Salah has a current best price of 10/11, with 8/11 on the lower end, according to scan of odds by Oddschecker on Thursday.
The Egypt captain won the Golden Foot Award recognising lifetime achievement in football on Monday.
However, he missed out the same day on winning the Ballon d'Or, much to the disappointment of many fans. Salah came in at seventh, behind Christiano Ronaldo at sixth, Ngolo Kante at fifth, and Karim Benzema at fourth.
Chelsea's Jorginho took third spot, behind PSG striker Robert Lewandowski and Argentina ace Lionel Messi at first.
Salah's Ballon d'Or ranking was seen by many fans as a snub, particularly given that his goalscoring record for the season stood neck-and-neck with Messi's at 32 on Monday, the night of the ceremony.
Asked about his feelings on the matter after Liverpool's 4-1 derby win against Everton on Wednesday, Salah burst out laughing and said: "I have no comment."
Former Arsenal striker Thierry Henry appeared to voice what many disappointed fans were thinking, saying: “He’s letting his football do the talking.”
