Mo Salah to auction kit to help Egyptian animal charity

Egyptian footballer Mohamed Salah has said he will help an animal charity in his home country by selling a piece of his kit. 

The Liverpool forward said in a tweet on Thursday evening that he will donate the shirt he wore in the Reds' 23 October match against Manchester United in an open auction for an animal welfare association in Egypt.

The 29-year-old, who was recently hailed as a "role model" in secondary-school text books across Egypt, said all proceeds would be sent to the unnamed chosen association as he stressed the importance of showing "kindness" to animals.

"Kindness to animals is the duty of every human being... in order to help, I will donate the Liverpool shirt that I wore... [and] send all proceeds from the auction to an animal welfare association in Egypt," he tweeted, informing fans that further details would be revealed "soon".

Salah, who was also declared a "great" role model by Sunni Islam's foremost cleric Sheikh Ahmed al-Tayeb, is known for his charity efforts off the pitch.

In 2018 the footballer donated 900,000 Egyptian pounds (55,000 USD) worth of medical equipment to an Egyptian hospital in the Nile Delta town of Basyoun.

Salah's sporting successes have seen him rack up the highest total number of English Premier League goals of any African footballer, scoring 107 goals, three more than Didier Drogba.
