'Miracle baby' born in rubble after Turkish-Syrian earthquake

A 'miracle baby' was born under the rubble of a collapsed building in northern Syria after a devastating series of earthquakes hit the region.

A group of men working to rescue civilians stuck inside the ruins found and took the newborn from under the rubble of a building in the town of Jindires in Aleppo province, according to tweets and videos circulated by activists online.

The 7.8 magnitude earthquake struck Turkey before dawn on Monday and was followed by a series of aftershocks, including a 7.5-magnitude quake. The disaster has killed at least 5,000 people, at least 1,602 of them in Syria.

The newborn’s mother is understood to have passed away after giving birth, according to activists. The baby has been deemed the "only survivor" in their family, according to Gulf News.

The child has simultaneously become a symbol of the dire devastation experienced in Turkey and Syria following the devastating quake, as well as a glimmer of hope as rescuers search for survivors.

Disaster agencies believe several thousand buildings were flattened across swathes of northern Syria, an area already plagued by war, a refugee crisis, and a recent cholera outbreak.
