A 35-year-old man is fighting for his life after being stabbed outside a mosque in the north of England this weekend, local media have reported.

The man was attacked outside the Markazi Jamia Mosque in Sheffield on Saturday evening.

Locals rushed to help the man until emergency services arrived at the scene.

According to reports, the man has sustained life-threatening injuries.

A 20-year-old man arrested on suspicion of murder has since been released as local police continue their investigation.

Clarifying earlier reports that the stabbing had taken place inside the mosque, a spokesperson for the police confirmed that it happened outside the place of worship, according to the Yorkshire Examiner.

In a statement to the local paper, the spokesperson said that the attack is believed to have been targeted and part of an ongoing dispute.
