The former Queen of Jordan expressed her condolences on Monday after the death of ousted Egyptian president Mohamed Morsi.

Noor al-Hussein, born to a Syrian-American Christian family as Lisa Najeeb Halaby, joined a chorus of officials and dignitaries from around the world who responded to Morsi's death.

"RIP first and only democratically elected President of #Egypt #Morsi," the queen dowager of Jordan tweeted.

Halaby married King Hussein of Jordan in 1978, becoming the Queen of Jordan.

Egypt's first democratically-elected president Mohamed Morsi was buried in Cairo on Tuesday a day after he collapsed in court and died.

Since Morsi's overthrow on 3 July 2013, his former defence minister, now President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, has waged an ongoing crackdown that has seen thousands of Muslim Brotherhood supporters jailed and hundreds facing death sentences.

A group of British parliamentarians in March 2018 warned that Morsi's detention conditions had not met international standards and could lead to his "premature death".

Other Brotherhood leaders have also died in custody.
