Jordan Crown Prince Hussein contracts Covid-19, King Abdullah and Queen Rania 'isolating'

Crown Prince Hussein of Jordan has contracted coronavirus, a statement from the Hashemite Royal Court announced on Monday afternoon.

The prince has "mild symptoms" and is in "good health", the announcement read. He contracted the virus despite haven taken the Covid-19 vaccine prior to his diagnosis.

Both King Abdullah II and Queen Rania will isolate for five days out of precaution, although both tested negative for the virus on Monday.

Jordan had seen a spike in Covid-19 cases earlier this year, where hospitals were overwhelmed and the country put under curfew procedures. At its peak in March, Jordan was experiencing over 8,500 new cases a day.

On 13 March, at least ten people died in a hospital in Al-Salt - a city about 30 minutes north of the capital - due to an oxygen shortage at the centre.

The incident caused intense public outrage and protests and prompted the resignation of the minister of health.

Jordan’s current seven-day average is 830 new cases a day - although the deathly rate is low at around 10 cases a day.

The annual Jerash Festival was held for the first time last week since the outbreak of the pandemic. The manager of the festival was fired after pictures of packed concert-goers without masks went viral.
