The Israeli army says it has started ground operations in southwestern Lebanon while dozens of Palestinians were killed by Israeli airstrikes in Gaza.

Israel ramped up its ground offensive along Lebanon's southern coast on Tuesday, deploying more troops and urging civilians near the Mediterranean to evacuate.

Hezbollah said it had fired rockets at the Israeli city of Haifa after the Israeli military reported 85 projectiles crossing from Lebanon.

Meanwhile in Gaza, Israel sent tanks deeper into Jabalia in the northern Gaza Strip on Tuesday and advised people to leave as it pounded the historic Palestinian refugee camp from the air, residents said.

Palestinian medics said casualties had been reported in Jabalia but that they were unable to reach areas under fire.

An Israeli strike on Syria's capital also killed seven people, and left at least 11 others wounded. The strike targeted a residential building in the Mazzeh neighbourhood.

Israel's war on Gaza has killed at least 41,09 Palestinians in over a year, while over 2,083 civilians in Lebanon have been killed since 8 October.
