Israeli forces shot and killed a Palestinian in Hebron on Monday after he allegedly attempted to attack a group of soldiers guarding a military checkpoint.

"An initial investigation revealed that the terrorist took out a knife and walked toward a group of soldiers at the Givat Avot checkpoint in Hebron. The soldiers opened fire at him," the military said in a statement.

No Israeli soldiers were injured.

Around 800 hard-line Jewish settlers live under the protection of over 1,000 Israeli soldiers in Hebron's Old City, surrounded by 30,000 Palestinians.

Palestinians face a large Israeli military presence in Hebron everyday, with at least 20 military checkpoints hindering freedom of movement.

Lone Palestinian attackers have carried out multiple deadly stabbings and car-rammings against Israelis in recent years.

More than 600,000 Israeli Jews live in settlements illegal under international law in the occupied West Bank and East Jerusalem, territories seized during the 1967 war.
