Israeli soldier injured in occupied West Bank dies
A soldier who was seriously wounded in action this week in the occupied West Bank has died, according to the Israeli military.
The military says Sgt. Ronen Lubarsky of an elite undercover commando unit succumbed to his wounds on Saturday. The soldier was mortally wounded on Thursday when during an arrest near occupied Ramallah a large marble block was dropped on his head from the top of a building.
The military says it apprehended the raid’s target, a Palestinian believed to be behind shooting attacks.
The search continues for the attacker who killed Lubarsky.
Lubarsky was posthumously promoted to staff sergeant.
Earlier this week, a Palestinian teenager shot by occupying Israeli forces died.
Fifteen-year-old Odai Akram Abu Khalil died on Wednesday.
Israeli troops shot Abu Khalil in the abdomen last week during a protest near Ramallah on the 70th anniversary of the Nakba.
Major protests took place across the Palestinian territories on May 14 as the US transferred its Israeli embassy to Jerusalem from Tel Aviv.
Smaller protests took place on May 15, which was the 70th anniversary of the Nakba, or catastrophe, when hundreds of thousands of Palestinians were expelled from their land during the war surrounding the creation of Israel.
Israeli troops massacred more than 60 Palestinians along the Gaza border over the two days, but the teen who died on Wednesday was the first killed in the West Bank.
Israel has occupied the West Bank illegally since 1967, committing various crimes against Palestinian civilians.
More than 600,000 Israeli Jews live in settlements in the occupied West Bank and East Jerusalem, in constructions considered illegal under international law.
