Israel's army shot and killed a Palestinian man in the early hours of Thursday as they raided a refugee camp near the occupied West Bank town of Bethlehem, the Palestinian health ministry has said.

Ayman Muhaisen, 29, was killed as Palestinians confronted Israeli soldiers during their dawn raid on the Dheisheh refugee camp just south of Bethlehem.

The army arrested two young Palestinian men in connection with the confrontation, local sources told The New Arab's sister site Al-Araby Al-Jadeed.

The Israeli army regularly conducts raids on Palestinian refugee camps, for what it says is to capture militants who have or intend to conduct attacks on Israelis.

Civilians are frequently killed and wounded in the raids.

Earlier this month, Palestinian journalist Shireen Abu Akleh was killed as she reported on a raid at a refugee camp in Jenin.

On Wednesday, Israeli forces killed Palestinian journalist Ghufran Warasneh while she worked at the Al-Arroub refugee camp north of Hebron.
